Tisco assisted the construction of China's first extremely deep underground laboratory

Recently, the stainless steel hot-rolled products produced by TiEsteel have been successfully applied to the liquid nitrogen thermostat storage tank project of the expansion project of China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the first extremely deep underground laboratory in China. This is another success of Tiesteel Manufacturing, which has helped the construction of major scientific research projects in China after it has been on the "artificial sun".

The China Jinping Underground Laboratory is located at the bottom of The Jinping Mountain along the Yalong River in Sichuan Province. It is the world's deepest underground laboratory and a major scientific and technological infrastructure project. Its completion marks that China now has a world-class clean and low radiation research platform capable of carrying out cutting-edge basic research projects in particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology and dark matter exploration.

The first phase of the project went into operation in 2010, and after the second phase of expansion after 2014, the underground laboratory's available space will be increased from the original 4,000 cubic meters to 300,000 cubic meters, providing space for larger studies. As one of the important equipments, liquid nitrogen thermostat storage tank can provide low temperature working environment and shielding radiation for detectors placed in underground laboratory.

In 2018, CIMC won the bid based on its brand awareness in the low-temperature equipment industry. As a strategic partner, TISCO has made every effort to help CIMC complete the material supply of liquid nitrogen thermostat storage tank. The biggest technical difficulty of the project is to solve the impact of the underground extreme air humidity environment on the quality of storage tanks, which puts forward extremely high requirements for the purity of stainless steel products, corrosion resistance under low temperature conditions, weldability under low temperature wet and cold environment and low temperature mechanical properties. Through field investigation and communication for many times, technical personnel of both sides have formulated measures such as adjusting composition, improving smelting purity and precise process control based on the current production process of stainless steel hot rolled coil (plate), so as to ensure the reliability of supply materials. Through the production technician's many times of tests, the repeated adjustment process, successfully completed this batch of products supply task.
